By now, it’s not a stretch to say that our smartphones are stressing us all out. The constant notifications, the buzzing, the phantom buzzing that you swore you felt but wasn’t actually there—I’m having a panic attack from just thinking about it. Even worse, studies have also shown that our smartphones are making our romantic relationships fizzle out with greater ease.
So, it’s time to make a change to how we’re using our pocket tech. But how? There may be a range of different options on the market but they all more or less offer the same problem: the threat of becoming addicted to the information and functionality right at our fingertips.
This problem is what the nascent tech company Siempo is hoping to address. They claim that their phone, which is currently seeking funding via Kickstarter, is “smart enough to know to leave [us] alone.” How? By offering a stri*ped-down suite of applications to keep you from becoming distracted by the other tasks and time-wasters that bog down the most popular smartphones. It will not support social media apps, and will boast features like a “Pause” mode to put your notifications on hold, as well as a “Mindful Mornings” feature that locks your phone until you’ve completed certain, pre-defined tasks—like, say, a 30-minute run to start your day.
And, though the phone will have a camera, it will only be front-facing, which means you can’t take a selfie with it as easily as you could an iPhone. There’s all sorts of design wrinkles like this—necessary flaws, if you will—that will make the Siempo a less seductive experience than its big-name competitors.
If you’re intrigued, you’re not alone. However, this idea will only get off the ground if it receives the funding it needs, so head on over to the product’s Kickstarter and make a donation now if you want to see this idea become a reality.
