I was born in Port Harcourt, but at some point, my father was transferred to Benin. He worked with a dredging company and through the years, I lived in different places. I had a very controlling father and as he told me recently, he caged me. I was so restricted that I didn’t have friends. It was like a military zone while growing up. He did everything to ensure that I was raised properly and he treated me like I was his only child even though I have five siblings.
I studied architecture at Caritas University, Enugu. It is a missionary school established by a reverend father. Even though I had always known that I wanted to become an entertainer, I still went ahead to earn a degree.
My mum can testify that when I was young, before I even clocked 10, I was so intelligent that I was leading my school’s choir, drama and other groups. I was so intelligent that the school couldn’t do anything without me. So from a young age, I knew that I wanted to do entertainment. My music career officially kicked off in 2014. Prior to that time, I had been meeting people and paying my dues.
A lot of people have been nice to me but the first person to believe in me is Emperor Chris Baywood Ibe. Then the person that gave me my first opportunity and showed me the way is Okon of 02 Media. I also had a lot of people that didn’t believe in me. In the movie world, the first person that gave me an opportunity is Emeka Ogiama. Despite several criticisms and insults he faced for his decision, he cast me to play the lead role in his movie, Ejiro, even though I was unknown at the time. It was actually the first professional movie I ever acted in and it was very successful. In music, Glory, was my breakthrough as it made everyone become aware that I am in music to reign. It was released in 2014.
As an artiste trying to prove herself, it was quite difficult to get people to listen to me. Many people that promised to be there for me turned me down. At the initial stage, my parents were not pleased with my decision, so they turned their back on me. At a point, I had to sell one of my cars at a giveaway price because I didn’t have any money and I wanted to make it in the industry.
Anybody that thinks I’m using my virginity to sell myself should come out and tell me the boyfriend he or she ever gave me. I’m not stopping anybody from publicly acknowledging their virginity if they still have it. I’m keeping my virginity so as to encourage young girls who feel pressured to get deflowered. I’m using my status to enlighten people that you can be cool, trendy, gorgeous and charming even as a virgin. I don’t play with my body because I see it as the temple of God. I have always been a reserved person. However, it is a personal decision and I can decide to start having s*x at anytime I want. There are times I lick my lips and feel tickled whenever I see fine boys but I always snap out of it. All the seductive pictures of me you see are about work because I’m also a model.
Davido and Boko Haram
I was joking at those times that I offered to give up my virginity to certain people. Meanwhile, I never offered Davido my virginity; I only I had a crush on him. I love him so much but if I give him my virginity, would I be doing it so as to become one of his baby mamas? Or would he marry me and make me his third or fourth wife?
I grew up listening to Christy Essien-Igbokwe, Onyeka Onwenu, and Victor Uwaifo, because I love highlife music. And that’s why I see myself as an Afro pop and highlife artiste; Afro fusion. I admire Genevieve Nnaji too; she is true to herself and is never pressured by what goes on in the society. I also love 2face and I see myself as his female version. I admire his humility and I look up to him.
I’m working towards releasing more singles right now. But I’m not ready for an album yet. An artiste has to prove him or herself with singles before coming out with an album. At the right time, even your fans would let you know that they want the album. Even a couple of big artistes in Nigeria don’t have albums because they know they need to have good singles out there first.
A fan saw me in public and asked to take a picture. I obliged him and he was trying to touch my br**sts. I stopped him and told him it was disrespectful. But he was saying it was just a picture. I was about to walk away when he apologised. Even though I was not happy, I still took the picture because he is a fan but I didn’t smile in it. Even if the person is your girlfriend, it is not proper for you to grab her b**bs in public.
I would describe my style of fashion as urban. It is classified as classy, vintage and a little bit of hip hop. An example of someone whose style of fashion is urban is Jidenna. I feel most comfortable in gowns and trousers. I also love showing my sexy bow legs. I am a very adventurous person so I can try anything. My favourite fashion item is wrist watch; you can never see me not wearing one.
I love to go to waterfalls and places where I can experience nature . Whenever I’m bored, I just drive down there and have a picnic. I am a very calculative and detailed person, so a lot of times I go such quiet places to relax and think.
