Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo has vowed never to return to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).He disclosed this yesterday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, when the PDP National Chairman, Ahmed Markafi, led a delegation to visit him.
Obasanjo said to go back to the party would mean going back to eat his vomit, an act he said, he would not do for whatever reason. He received the PDP delegation at the Olusegun Presidential Library (OOPL), where they held a one-hour closed-door meeting.
When asked of his message for the PDP, Obasanjo said: “I have said that publicly before and I will say it again, for our democracy to thrive and continue to be strong, we need a strong party in government and a strong party in the opposition. It has to be that way, otherwise the party in government would get away with impunity and that is not good for democracy.”
Obasanjo who spoke in both English and pidgin said: “This na two colleagues meeting, two colleagues before before, when I was the President, the Chairman (Markafi) was a Governor.
“I have told the Chairman that I was in PDP before but not now: God forbid, sey when a dog vomits, it will go back to eat its vomit, I have said no to partisan politics.
“For me, no partisan politics again, but Nigeria is my passion until death do us part. In anything that concerns Nigeria; the good of Nigeria, you will see my involvement.”
In the party’s delegation were the Chairman of the South West Caretaker Committee, Eddy Olafeso and a former Minister of Steel and Mines, Sharafa Tunji-Ishola.But, less than two years after he left the PDP to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), a former senator in Enugu state, Fidelis Okoro, yesterday rejoined the party, saying that Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s good works were responsible for his decision.
Okoro represented Enugu north senatorial zone between 1999 and 2003, had dumped the PDP soon after the APC won the presidential election. Speaking at the kick-off of the local government election campaign of the PDP in Nsukka council, Okoro, said he also rejoined the PDP because of the transparent process of the emergence of the candidates in the state.
