The All Progressives Congress (APC) has congratulated the new national Chairman and other newly-elected officials of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Chairman of the ruling party, APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun in a statement on Tuesday congratulating Prince Uche Secondus on his election at the PDP’s recent National Convention expressed hope that the newly-elected Chairman will use his experience garnered over the years to ensure that the PDP assumes its role as a responsible opposition party in the country.
“Our Party wholeheartedly welcome opposition because we believe that democracy cannot thrive without a vibrant but responsible opposition that puts the nation first. This will often challenge you to balance partisan interests with overall national considerations,” the statement read in part.
He assured the PDP National Chairman of the willingness of APC to engage him in an atmosphere devoid of acrimony and rancour.
Odigie-Oyegun in the statement said he believes that working together with the APC can both elevate the language and temper of politics in Nigeria, thereby providing the enabling environment for democracy to thrive in the country.
This congratulatory message by the APC is coming two days after the APC criticised the outcome of the national convention of the PDP, describing it as abnormal.
Shortly after the polls, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mr Bolaji Abdulllahi in a statement on Sunday said the party sees the convention as being rigged and that the exercise exposed the opposition party as a platform with corruption in its DNA.
The PDP in swift reaction noted that the attack by the APC was simply because the APC has outrightly been rejected by Nigerians and is now “clutching on straws for survival.
